Ethiopia Breaks Tree Planting World Record
Ethiopia has set a world record in planting trees as part of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Green Legacy Initiative.
On July 29 353,633,660 million young trees were planted in one day, as Ethiopia targets the addition of four billion saplings overall.
The previous record was held by India for planting 66 million trees in a day.
Prime Minister Abiy participated in the event, joining officials in ArbaMinch in southern Ethiopia to plant seedlings. The Prime Minister has made the fight against environmental degradation a priority, with the country suffering the negative impact of climate change through droughts.
The initiative has received widespread support from both government and business officials, with staff and representatives from organisations including the United Nations and Africa Union coming to participate in the planting.
