Ebola Reaches Goma, DRC

The current outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has reached Goma.

The first case to be recorded in the city was confirmed by officials on Sunday. Since the outbreak began in August 2018 around 2,500 have been infected, with more than 1,600 deaths.

Rwanda has been put on high alert following confirmation of the case, given its close proximity to the city. However, officials in DRC said they were hopeful that the disease would not spread widely in the city after the patient in question was quickly identified and isolated.

Preparations ahead of a possible spread of the outbreak to the city have been underway for some time, including the set up of various hand-washing stations.
