DRC Declares Measles Epidemic

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has declared a measles epidemic in the country, following 87,000 suspected cases in 2019 to date.

The disease has spread across the country, with cases recorded in 23 of the country’s 26 provinces. Estimates put the number of fatalities at around 1,500.

Children are particularly susceptible to the disease. As such, efforts are underway to vaccinate as many as possible.

Meanwhile, the Ebola outbreak in the DRC earlier this month recorded its 2000th case. Ebola cases remain concentrated in North Kivu and Ituri.
