Tanzania To Revamp Old Rail Lines

Tanzania is revamping its old metre gauge railway in a bid to support regional trade.

The route is over 100 years old and in need of serious renovation. Phase one is already complete. At a cost of over US$2 million the Tanzania Railway Corporation oversaw the work on the 353km line from Tanga port to Moshi railway station. The total cost for the project is expected to stand at around $6.8 million.

While work on the standard gauge railway continues the future of the project continues to come under question as a result of funding concerns. Kenya and Uganda have both also announced plans to renovate old routes in the meantime.
