Tanzania Auctions Hunting Concessions

Tanzania is auctioning hunting concessions across 82 blocs using an online bidding system. The move to a digital platform has been made in an attempt to address concerns regarding the abuse of the old system by state officials.

Starting from June 10 the process is expected to take three years, with blocks offered in stages. So far 26 blocks have been put to auction, with at least 18 of these in the Selous-Mikumi area.

Blocks will be leased for a period of ten years, subject to parliamentary approval of the new rules concerning leasing, with successful bidders awarded up to five areas each.

It has also been reported that foreign operators will see some taxes waived in a bid to boost interest and tourism as the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (Tawa) looks to generate revenues of $3.4 million annually.
