Kenya Closes Lamu Border

Kenya has closed the Lamu border with Somalia as a result of security operations against Al Shabaab militants.

While security officers will continue to use the crossing, local villages have been prohibited from engaging in cross-border trade following a rise in illegal trade in the region.

Last week fishing activities near the Somali coast border were also prohibited, with the Lamu county commissioner Joseph Kanyiri declaring the area unsafe. Those found trespassing in the area may face arrest and prosecution.

Lamu has been the target of several Al Shabaab terror attacks to date and if also a known crossing point for militants seeking to enter Kenya. The border region is also a problem spot for the trafficking of humans and drugs, as well as contraband goods.
