Kenya Launches Digital Economy Blueprint

Kenya has launched a blueprint for its digital economy, having been appointed to develop a blueprint by the Smart Africa Initiative, the continental body in charge of advancing a single digital market in Africa.

Speaking on the launch President Kenyatta stated, “It is intended as a framework to guide us as we accelerate the adoption of digital technologies. I hope all countries will find value in contextualising this framework to their specific ecosystems so as to realise the full potential of our digital transformation.”

The plan has five pillars, including transforming government service delivery through digitisation, empowering businesses, entrepreneurship, innovation and skills through technology.

According to a 2017 report by Siemens when it comes to digitalisation on the continent South Africa leads the pack, followed by Kenya, Nigeria and Ethiopia. The Brookings Institution has names Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Mozambique, Malawi and Senegal as the strongest innovation achievers in Africa.
