Tanzania Embarks On Repossession Drive
The Government of Tanzania has stated its intention to repossess 15 enterprises that were previously privatised as a result of their failure to perform. A further 33 enterprises are being considered for repossession, according to the Ministry of industry and Trade.
However, the Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) has challenged that delayed tax refunds have made their business uncompetitive, with outstanding refunds of $15.5 million due. It has also called for a more competitive business environment in order for local enterprises to be able to compete effectively in the region.
The Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Constantine Kanyasu has separately warned that private hotels and lodges could also face repossession as a result of alleged mismanagement, in March stating, "The ownership of the hotels will be shifted to other investors who are ready to manage them in the interest of promoting tourism."
