40 Plus KRA Employees Arrested

More than 40 officials from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) have been arrested in connection with corruption allegations, including managers, supervisors and revenue officers.

The matter has been under investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the National Intelligence Service and the KRA itself.

The individuals are alleged to have connections to tax cartels that have been working to cheat the system. Specific practices uncovered include facilitation of fraudulent clearance of cargo, the fraudulent amendment of tax returns, and the irregular issuance of tax compliance certificates.

While the KRA is suspected to have lost billions as a result of tax evasion, some of the employees implicated are thought to have received daily bribes of up to Sh500,000.

The KRA has regularly come under fire for missing revenue collections targets. It has been reported that some of those arrested may also be used a prosecution witnesses to secure additional convictions.
