Mombasa Port Enjoys SGR Boost
Earnings at Mombasa port in Kenya are up, with Sh45.35 billion earned in 2018, up from Sh41.56. The port is currently undergoing a five-year modernisation project to increase its capacity and upgrade facilities as Kenya looks to match competitor ports in Durban, Egypt and Lagos.
The port also appears to be benefitting from the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project, which connects the port to Nairobi.
Cargo volumes at the port were up from 30.34 million tonnes in 2017 to 30.92 in 2018. However, profits were down slightly from Sh10.6 billion to Sh10.3 due to increased expenditure.
