China Invests $2.96 billion in EAC

China has invested $2.96 billion in the East African region between 2011 and 2017, according to Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) figures released by the China-Africa Research Institute. This represents a substation increase on the $307.76 million that flowed into the region in the period 2004 to 2010.

The data was sourced from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and suggests that Kenya has received the biggest share of investment, totalling $1.3 billion, followed by Tanzania at $890 million.

Uganda received $536 million, South Sudan $39 million, Rwanda $18 million and Burundi $9.91 million.

Zambia was the biggest recipient of Chinese FDI on the African continent between 2011 and 2017, received $1.6 billion in investments.
