Sh40 Billion Contract Awarded to Blacklisted Firm
According to reports by the Daily Nation a Sh40 billion tender for the construction of the Kipevu Oil Terminal in Mombasa was awarded to a firm that had been blacklisted by the World Bank.
Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) awarded the contract after launching the tender in 2016. 31 bidders have been reported as showing interest in the tender but the award was made to Chinese firm China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) in 2018. CCCC’s parent company China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) was blacklisted by the World Bank between 2009 and 2017 after an investigation found it had engaged in collusive practices in the Philippines.
The award is now subject to investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
