Uganda Accuses Rwanda Of Imposing Trade Barriers

Uganda has accused Rwanda of imposing trade barriers between the two countries, with customs officials claiming that Ugandan goods are being denied entry into Rwanda.

Late last month the Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) announced the temporary closure of the Katuna border post to allow for infrastructure works. Since then Ugandan traders have reported problems getting access to the country across multiple border points. Rwanda has also advised its citizens not to travel to Uganda on grounds of security and safety.

According to Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa the result is an effective trade embargo, with only trucks destined for Democratic Republic of Congo being granted passage.

The East African Law Society (EALS) is among those seeking to resolve the dispute between the two countries. The group has observer status within the East African Community (EAC) and has confirmed that they have reached out to both sides to offer to mediate the disagreement. President Kenyatta of Kenya has also reportedly held talks on the matter with both Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
